100% possible. Just make sure you run the installer (assuming you're using an installer) and tell it to install the game(s) to the external drive. Do not just 'drag and drop' the game files to the external hard drive.
Most propriety games write data to the registry, which contains vital info like the CD key and where the game directory is. You can update the entries yourself, but you might accidentally screw something up. It's best to let the game installer do it.

If both hard drives are of similar specs regarding transfer speed it doesn't matter. At all. The game should run just as efficiently.

If the game is installed on the external, it will run off the external. By connecting another hard drive to your computer, it will use the resources present on the computer. The processor? Shared. RAM? Shared. Graphics Card? Shared. etc.

If you use the esata connector rather than USB you won't have any performance issues with the drive.

You'll still need a way to power the drive, either by extending a power connector from your PC or buying an adapter for powering HDDs.

theoritically it should work, but it depends on the way the game was installed: if it's a "portable" installation, everything needed will be inside the folder. Otherwise, there's going to be missing pieces from /appdata/ and the such.

Some old games might work, but most modern games place settings files and such crap in the C:\users\dragonathanis1337h4x0r\AppData\Local\Yourgame\ folder and store some additional keys in the system register. So In order to play it, you will need to install it on both computers separately. However, you can still copy the saved files and game settings from AppData\local\yourgame\ folder to another PC.
