Just started up CQB after a long time again.
I was surprised how great it feels, particularly with the internal changes and some of the turning limitations removed, that made it feel so laggy.
Pulling the trigger is such a good "simulation" which can never be reached with Cod4.

Now, after having congratulated myself for the good job, I am thinking why do I care at all for fancy new player models or shiny shaders?
The mapping, I admit, has advantages in Cod4, but lightmaps are so much better in CQB.

Too sad I dont have time ATM, but why do I not just release a standalone with own ETengine and merge TCE maps slowly in?

I guess nobody would play it except for happy hackers.
And I had hoped that MWTC might attract some new folks ...

If there are other players, I will play it every day. I don't care with whom, I'll just play it. BRING IT!

I'll be honest, I was expecting this. How many times have you seen people talking about MWTC? And how many times have you seen people talking about CQB? MWTC: None. CQB: Bajillions.

Well, that took you quite a lot of time to realize.

I totally agree. I'm glad that you have this news for TC:CQB
I recently tried TC:CQB on a Japanese server against some bots (tcbotmatsuri.dip.jp).
I was impressed by the quality and so I tried to do some experiments.
First I converted my (unique) map for cqb and then I started experimenting with how I could customize the player models.
Here are some screenshots of my first raw attempts:

please please PLEEASE do that :) i loved cqb and tce, played it alot and was starting to get a clan going, then MWTC was announced and everyone we knew lost interest in the whole project. a standalone tc/cqb would be so awesome!

I find CQB is a great game, but for all your mods, something left: communication.
I think you must make more communication to show your game.
And another thing: installation.
Create a single patch with ennemy territory, tce and cqb, because there is a lot of bugs actually.

Then, fix some bugs, add tce maps to cqb and the game will be fine !

So, I have a question blinking in the sky ... what to expect about the anti-cheat support in CQB? Tzac not seems be a good solution for ET, especially by the lack of support to linux / Mac.

At the same time, CQB does not have a playable version for Mac, and I think the target public for this game is currently not for the most part, in Windows users (that have dozens of good options for 3D shooters), but in linux/mac users, mostly because support for 3D linux games is currently better, with the work of Valve together with the developers of video drivers.

But there are problems to fill successfully this niche: Enemy Territory for linux still carries the lack of good support for ALSA libraries (was made for the old OSS) and needs a "patch" made with the SDL libraries to reasonable support of the game sounds (and here I make a remark - only resonable, but minimally sufficient).

I think, in the light of the above considerations, that the windows support isn't the unique option to this game. I really think that its popularity was great, in a big portion, by having had a good linux/Mac support. And finally I think, in light the above explanation, that the linux game engine needs more modifications than that were mentioned on this and another posts. So, a standalone version would be the solution.

EDITED: when I refered to the popularity, I meant of TC franchise popularity

I think a standalone would be a plus for CQB. In my opinion, one of the reasons people don't get to much interested in some TC games is because of the "modding" part, you know: placing folders here and there, patching, etc. So with a standalone you would make things a lot easier for those people.

Seriously? Attrack new players with a COD mod? When people is already tired of any COD-like game because they think It is just another bad rip off. Which is wrong because anyone that knows what a True Combat game is about, they would never say such stupidity.

Yes, open-source standalone is definitly the way to go! Modding for more or less dead and a decade old games (CoD:WM falls under this too) is just just not going to get many player interested.

I would strongly suggest that you don't start your completely own ET:Wolf fork though... lets be honest you have been on and off this thing a lot, and it would be a pity if this would fall fallow again soon after starting it as a standalone.

If you want to go for the most basic, I would recommend using the ET:legacy engine (http://www.etlegacy.com/), e.g. make it a mod of that but pack in the engine in a stand alone release (but do not fork the engine into something different).

But even better would be probably to use the Deamon engine from the Unvanqished project (http://www.unvanquished.net/). It is based on ET:Wolf, ioQuake3 and some parts of XReal, but they spend a lot of effort consolidating the engine to have a stable base for their game.
I am not sure how easy it would be to get CQB running on it, but in the long run this engine would allow much nicer effects.

I am also sure that if you put up an open-source repository on Github, you would get quite a few external contributors too.

Anyways, looking forward to play the stand-alone CQB version!

Call me stupid if you want, but after all these years I can't become enthusiastic about anything that involves Tremulous. Yeah, they got a think or two working. Even the notion that it uses Xreal's renderer gives me an odd feeling. It's so many things I am skeptic about all in one.

Coroner let's face it - you are too old for video games. Besides you are no team player and lonely wolves can't produce modern FPS games any longer. Don't be stubborn german and focus your time on more important things like family and kids. TC is ready for Matilda ;)

I agree with Sxy Coroner, time to flip the switch to off. Its been a great run and you've inspired many people in many different ways. ( lol ) Some good, some bad, and others we'll never know about. Like was tc:e the first game with iron sights and awesome lean? It will be in my mind. Congratulations on that from me my friend. Those of us around will pay attention to your work, hobbies, or even playtesting with tce, but I do believe its time to call it a well earned break. Specially from taking us up multiple mountains of hope and some how managing to to surprise us with the cliff we just fell off of. xD

Thank you Coroner,
Ross

coroner, if your interested and im not planning to take over your game,
but i can offer you money if i can use the name TrueCombat,
cause im planning to recruit game developers to make a stand alone game with a high end game engine, im not talking nonsense, because i have my connections, i know someone personally named nasrul who is a developer of the game developers guerilla, one's who have created the killzone series, he can hook me up with a game development team who can develop a new true combat on a whole new game engine, but it's not for free, my budget is about 30.000euros, i can pay them in terms, but before i start a game company, i'm going to open a bar/club/restaurant, called "JONATHAN TAYLOR" in 5 months, so coroner u have still plenty time to consider my proposal, like i said this is no nonsense, it's real talk!

lmao@XenoKiller, i remembered i said to xenokiller that im going to be a game developer by just suggesting, then xenokiller said something like u cant be a game developer if don't know how to program, now im lmao, i got the damn money now and you'll see that i wil be running my own gaming company in less then 2 years, and just suggesting ideas to my development team i hired and let them do all the work, and trust me im gonna make allot of damn profit by just making a free game for gamers, how? im not gonna tell, you will notice somewhere that a game company named: Dragonathan :is going to rise, mark my words,
