Mark one excellent technique you may want to consider for your model's BDU skins is the coarse fabric technique... Fabrics like Cambrelle or Cordura with loose open weaves are scanned or photographed, color adjusted, then slightly zoomed and wrapped on the model...

The result does look a bit coarse but is much more aesthetically pleasing and convincing then the smeary effect of fine detail fabric textures.

Cordura or ballistic nylon and Cambrelle a wicking fabric used to line space suits, body armor, and boots are trademarked textiles that you can find plenty of swatch samples of via a Google search -- they are also the most commonly sampled weaves used in image captured textiles for models in games...

Some sample shots of the resulting effect can be see via these embedded links for:

· Pariah
· Half Life 2
· Tribes Vengeance
· EurpCops

Well that last one is not the best example, but it's a pretty good model and project for amateur work...

Your mileage in the id Engine may vary, but most engines seeem to offer very nice results with this technique... Some Texture Artists also appear to choose to light their textile swatches before image capturing them at a very acute angle to increase shadow and the appearance of depth...

I'm not sure, the last two almost look worse than TC:E, the second, about as good, and the first actually looks better. But thats it. :?
