to tell you the truth, some your your suggestions are impossible. Your trying to make TCE look like something it cant be, something like BF2 in terms of quality. Those things are great, with detail and everything, but you have to admit, the engine has already been streched out too far, eventually it will come to a point that it woul no longer work and needs a replacement.

Improving the Physic's Engine?

Yes, that's not impossible but it's taking making the game better to the extreme.

As far as I am concerned, QIII cant really qualify to be called a physics engine. Just look, physics engines have ragdoll, dynamic animations of objects, better interaction with the environments. What does QIIIE have? gravity, and thats about it, so you cant improve the physics of a game that doesnt even have an actual physics engine. QIIIE is only a 3d rendering engine, thats basically it. Everything else is game code, from weapons function, etc.

Well, tell that to Dragon.

I'm sure we brought those points up hundreds of times. But stom (Stupid in Dutch) over here just keeps bringing the "Let's change the physic's engine".

And thats impossible because there is no physics engine to start with. 8) seriously, there isnt. QIIIE is a 3d rendering engine not a physics engine.

Maybe if we keep saying that, he'll notice that we are trying to make a point and he'll possibly even listen. :o

Perhaps someone should get official words from Carmack that Quake III doesnt use a physics engine, then maybe he'll believe us.

Sorry if I have to correct you: The term "physics" of a game engine was used long before "real" physic-simulations (ragdoll, gravity etc.) like Havok were available. In the original sense, Q3 actually HAS physics. The term was used to describe things like collision, the way map objects behave (breakable stuff), also "gravity" ascpects (jump height, remember jump pads in Q3, ability to do rocket jumps...that's all aspects of so-called physics).

We use the term "physics engine" in a different way today (since they often are seperate 3rd party engines implemented in the renderer, even for Source and Unreal) and we will even more when graphic cards with their own processor for physics will be common.

However, the dichotomy of the "physics"-term in older and new engines emphasizes the inappropriateness of Dragons suggestions even more.

Technically, it is also illegal to modify the physics engine of games if the game ahd one. Havok physics engine is "license required". Garry's mod for HL2 doesnt change the physics engine only the game code adding more user control to the physics engine. Melmoth is right about QIII, it does have physics, basic physics, but no physics engine. QIII simply uses integrated game code to handle things like basic movements and gravity. This code cant do what the dedicated physics engine can do so it iss stuck where it is.

Very true. Although there are also powerful open source physics engines, comparable to Havok, it would still be illegal to modify WET that way. Not to mention the effort. And (as final argument) as you may see, Coroner doesn't have enough time to code (compared to physics implementation) small things. The implementation of physics would take him years! Will you still play games based on WET engine in 2010, Dragon? Even with physics? I won't.

Funny, Max Payne 2 uses the Havok engine, and I've seen several Physic's mods for it.

I remember Bethesda Softworks needed to delay the release of the "Elder Scrolls Construction Set" for Oblivion because they had to discuss license issues with the Havok guys.

Well, actually it just uses the physics engine, but what was modded is the game code itself. They just change the way the player interacts with the physics engine by modding the game code. The game code does everything with and by the limitations of the physics engine, so by changing the code, it changes the effects of the physics engine itself by changing the way you interact with it.
