Right after the release of 0490 I went on a small holiday and some real-life business trips. Besides reading the forum and collecting community opinions, I could not do much so far, sorry about that. ...

The CTF flag bug is fixed already, a priority list of bugs and flaws is compiled and the plan is now to release a babystep client/server fix(0490b) as soon as possible.

There are two main issues with 0490 which I'd like to address further. I feel we might have done wrong strategic decisions in this area.


1) The widescreen decision.

We are currently discussing to give the player free choice of 4:3, 16:10 or 16:9 aspect ratios. While we will stick to design the UI, the HUD, and the first-person gun positions for the 16:9 mode (TrueVision), the client would be able to choose different aspect ratios which would open up more vertical (up-down) viewangle while the horizontal viewangle (left-right) stays constant (90 deg; as it is now and always was). By keeping the horizontal viewangle constant, the central and most important part of the screen stays identical for all formats.

Additionally, we might offer the option of a "constant view-area mode" for 16:10 and 16:9 which would increase the field of view (FOV) so that all modes have identical or comparable view areas. It is hard to say whether the additional FOV to the sides of widescreens would be beneficial or whether they would actually hurt because the central area of the screen would be less "magnified".

All this has to be evaluated and discussed.


2) The "jack of all trades" issue.

Unfortunately, the decision to release CTF in such an unfinished and bugged state watered the perception of TCE as having no direction and gametype optimized gameplay. I would like to further finish the minimod code and to clearly separate the gametypes from each other as soon as possible. Maps will have gametype optimized geometry, meaning that not all maps will exist for all minimods or that different versions of maps will exist for the different minimods.
